When Do You Need Dental Crowns?

At Gentle Smiles of Colorado, we strive to help patients throughout Golden, Wheat Ridge, and the greater Denver area achieve beautiful, healthy smiles through quality dental treatment. At our practice, we place a strong focus on routine, preventive dental care, because we know the best way to achieve a great smile is to keep your natural teeth in good health. Sometimes, however, problems can develop, and when they do, we offer a variety of treatment options to help solve them. One of the most common treatments we offer for more advanced dental decay are dental crowns – and no, this has nothing to do with royalty!

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a restorative dental procedure designed to repair a tooth

that's suffered from a cavity, fracture, or other dental trauma. Normally, crowns are used

on teeth with advanced cavities or trauma, where the damage is too extensive to fix with a regular dental filling. Essentially, a dental crown is an artificial "cap" that's shaped and color-matched to fit over an existing tooth. While a filling replaces decayed material within the tooth with biocompatible filler, substituting only a section of the tooth, a crown replaces all exposed tooth surface.

What Is the Procedure for a Dental Crown?

Placing a dental crown is a relatively routine, minor procedure that we can complete in two office visits. First, your dentist will carefully remove all decayed or infected tooth material, then clean and sterilize the tooth. Next, your dentist will carefully reshape the tooth, shaving away material in order to give the tooth a shape that the crown can fit over. After shaping the tooth, we'll take an impression of the tooth to use for molding your crown. We'll end this first appointment by placing a temporary crown to protect your tooth while we have your permanent crown manufactured. After a brief waiting period, we'll bring you back in for a second appointment to remove the temporary crown, make any final adjustments, and place your permanent crown. Once your crown is in place, your tooth is good as new!
