Electric vs. Manual Toothbrushes

Electric vs. Manual Toothbrushes
Posted on 01/08/2018

We all know that brushing twice a day, in combination with daily flossing, is a foundational part of any oral hygiene regimen. But brushing is also the subject of one of the most common questions we hear from patients: should I use a manual or electric toothbrush? Are electric toothbrushes better than manual toothbrushes? As your Denver, CO dentist, we want to answer this question, once and for all.

Are Electric Toothbrushes Better Than Regular Toothbrushes?

If you read the marketing copy, it seems like electric brushes may be better than manual ones – they come with a variety of features and benefits, and one would think they clean teeth better, as well. But the truth isn't as clear cut.

In reality, while electric brushes may be more convenient, they're not functionally very different from manual brushes. With proper brushing technique and a diligent, consistent oral hygiene regimen, you can keep your teeth perfectly clean and healthy using either a manual or an electric toothbrush. At the end of the day, the question of whether to get an electric toothbrush is really about personal preference. If it seems more convenient for you, get one – but if not, it isn't a necessary expense.

To be sure, electric toothbrushes have an advantage in convenience. They don't generally require as much technique as regular brushes, many feature automatic timers for 2 minutes to help you brush for the recommended amount, and some come with even more features. But ultimately, you can prevent tooth decay using any kind of toothbrush, provided you brush twice a day with good technique.
