What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Fun Facts About Pediatric DentistryPediatric dental care is specific to children, their mouths and teeth, and their growth and development. Our Golden family dentists treat children from infancy through adolescence. Gentle Smiles of Colorado treats all children as individuals and applies the best and most appropriate treatment for them. It is our goal to ensure your child and family feel comfortable in our office and are able to receive the dental care your children deserve.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit is Sooner Than You Think

A child's first dental visit should be scheduled around their first birthday. The most important part of the visit is getting to know and becoming comfortable with the Gentle Smiles of Colorado dental team. A pleasant, comfortable first visit builds trust and helps put the child at ease during future dental visits.

Oral Hygiene Throughout Childhood

Good pediatric dentistry starts at home to prevent tooth decay throughout childhood. Parents and children of all ages can take certain steps to prevent plaque buildup and tooth decay. To avoid dental fillings in Wheat Ridge, we recommend the following for your children and their development:

Oral Hygiene Throughout ChildhoodBabies: Brush your baby's first teeth gently with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush, using just a thin smear of fluoride toothpaste, at least once a day at bedtime. Before a tooth has fully erupted, you can use a water-soaked gauze pad to clean around the tooth and gums. Please bring your child in to see our dentist by age 1 for early dental care. We can demonstrate proper hygiene techniques, look for signs of early decay, and recommend fluoride supplementation if needed.

Children: Starting at age 3, you can begin teaching your child to brush with a children's toothbrush and no more than a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Please remember, children will need help with this important task until about age 6 when they have the fine motor skills to do an effective job themselves.

Teenagers: At this point, your children have the primary responsibility for maintaining their day-to-day dental health, but you can continue to help them make good dietary and behavioral choices.
