Warning Signs Your Filling Needs Replacing

Warning Signs Your Filling Needs Replacing
Posted on 09/24/2021

For the most part, dental fillings are meant to be durable. However, they aren’t indestructible. At some point, they will require replacement, depending on how well you take care of them. Getting a replacement is easy, but how do you know if you needa replacement? At Gentle Smiles of Colorado, we offer dental fillings for patients who need them. Our doctors and staff are here to guide you on what signs to look out for before getting them replaced.

Emphasis Signs to Look Out For

  • Filling is Cracked or Chipped- After a while, wear and tear can cause your filling to crack or chip. This can happen if you grind your teeth, or even if you eat something hard or sticky. If you notice a difference, see your dentist.
  • Your Tooth Hurts or is Sensitive- Do you have a throbbing toothache where your filling is? Or does it turn whenever you eat or drink hot or cold foods? It could be possible that your filling has deteriorated and a deep cavity has developed. A damaged filling allows bacteria to invade the space, creating discomfort and sensitivity. If it is left untreated, it can become infected, and require a root canal or extraction.
  • Filling is Discolored- Do you notice that your filling has changed color? Over time, tooth-coloured fillings can become darker or start to look yellow-ish. Replacing the filling will restore your tooth’s appearance.
  • Injured- If you were injured in an accident with a blow to the mouth, you may have a tooth fracture. Also, restorations such as fillings could become chipped, loosened, or completely dislodged. If you do experience an injury, visit your dentist as soon as possible.
  • Filling is Old- Fillings last between 7-15 years. Depending on the type of material used, you may have to replace the filling earlier. If your filling is old and starting to show some signs of wear and tear, it’s important to replace it before it cracks.
  • Filling is Missing- Did you find a piece of shell, bone, or a pit in your food? Perhaps your filling came out. Or maybe you don’t know when it was damaged or swallowed, but all you feel is a crack or gap where the tooth was previously filled. Go to the dentist so they can check to see if you need a replacement.
