Though minor chips do not always need treatment, it may be suggested that you receive care to get the damage repaired. Without treatment, the chip could get worse or become painful. With that in mind, the following are steps you can take if you have a chipped tooth:
- Plan a visit to your dentist to avoid the possibility of the chip getting more damaged; it may be easily repaired with a filling
- Rinse your mouth with salt water
- If you are in pain, you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever
- If the chipped tooth is left sharp or jagged, try covering it with a bit of wax paraffin or sugarless gum to avoid having your tongue, top or cheek cut
- If you choose to eat, try to rely on soft foods to avoid biting down on the chipped tooth
