Canker sores are small ulcers that can cause pain as well as discomfort. While you can call our periodontics Denver office to get rid of them, you can try home remedies, too. There are five easy and simple tips on how to get rid of canker sores.

Drink Aloe Vera Juice

Canker sores are not contagious but cause a lot of general discomforts. They're usually found around the base of your gums or on the inside of your mouth. Aloe vera is just one method that can get rid of them. You have the choice of drinking juice from the plant or applying food-grade aloe vera gel to the sore.

Rinse with Lidocaine

Dr. Tim Wachuta offers lidocaine to patients as a way to help them cope with the pain they feel. There are many mouthwash products on the market that now use it as an ingredient. If you have a lot of pain caused by your sores, try using one of these rinses. You just need to pour some into your mouth, swish it around for 30 to 60 seconds, and then spit. You can use it a few times a day.

Apply Ice

Ice is great to use on canker sores because it has a numbing effect. For a canker sore that is painful, wrap an ice cube in a small cloth and hold it inside your mouth. You should feel some relief within seconds.

Try Apple Cider Vinegar

Canker sores can form around dental crowns and braces. Using apple cider vinegar can help when you follow a few key steps.

  • Mix two tablespoons of cool water with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • Coat the bottom of a cotton swab with the mixture
  • Place the swab on the affected area
  • Repeat the process several times a day

Try Oral Medications

For canker sores that are painful and won't go away, make an appointment to talk to Dr. Tim Wachuta. You may find relief from oral medications such as ulcer drugs and some steroids. Oral medications allow you to take one pill at a time and heal the sore from the inside out. You need a prescription from a doctor to obtain them.

Dealing with Canker Sores
You don't always need a periodontics Denver specialist to help you cope with canker sores. We often recommend that our patients try some home remedies first such as rinsing with lidocaine and using apple cider vinegar. Feel free to contact us here at Gentle Smiles of Colorado when you have canker sores.
