Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are custom-made coverings that cover and protect an original tooth that's damaged or decayed. Thanks to advances in dental technology, modern crowns are stronger and more natural looking than ever. Dr. Wachuta and Dr. Heilman have only your best interests at heart when it comes to your oral health therefore, once complete, we'll be sure you receive instructions on caring for your crown. With the right care dental crowns can last the rest of your life!

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown can best be described as a covering/cap that wraps around an existing tooth for the purpose of providing supplementary support, enhanced strength, and, of course, an armor-like shield. Crowns are primarily used in instances where the tooth or teeth have been damaged, but not beyond repair. This tooth or teeth can be salvaged by adding a customized tooth-shaped cover. Here at Gentle Smiles of Colorado, we house a variety of materials we can use to make your crown such as porcelain, gold, acrylic resin, or a composite material.

What Can I Expect During The Procedure?

Typically, the procedure for receiving a dental crown takes two appointments. The first appointment is where the foundation is laid for your future crown:

  • We numb the tooth, then we remove any decayed sections around it.
  • We re-sculpt the tooth, helping create a perfect fit for the crown.
  • We'll make an impression of the tooth, either physical or digital, then use it to manufacture your own custom crown.
  • We'll fit you with a temporary crown of acrylic resin to protect the tooth while your custom crown is manufactured.

The second appointment will take place after your customized dental crown has been manufactured and sent to your dentist. Once ready, we'll bring you back in to remove the temporary crown and fit the permanent one.
